Awaiting Clarity on the 2024 BECE School Selection Process

Awaiting Clarity on the 2024 BECE School Selection Process

It has been days since the 2024 BECE ended, yet students, teachers, schools, and parents remain uncertain about when the school selection process for 2024 BECE graduates will begin.

In his pre-examination message to candidates, Dr. Eric Nkansah mentioned that the school selection phase would commence after the exams. However, there is currently a lack of information, prompting numerous questions from parents and candidates regarding the process.

Key questions include:

    • When will the school selection for 2024 BECE graduates begin?
    • Will learners choose schools before or after the release of results?
    • During the selection phase, will children choose the programs they intend to study?
    • When will schools send learners’ continuous assessment records to WAEC?
    • How many schools will students be able to choose from?
    • Will students select more or fewer schools than the 11 they selected in 2023?
    • What subjects will SHS1 students start learning in September 2024?
    • Is there a cutoff point for SHS1 placement in September 2024?

These questions reflect the concerns of parents and students who graduated from junior high school this year. Unfortunately, the Ghana Education Service and the Ministry of Education have not yet provided any official updates on the school selection process. Unconfirmed reports suggest that the introduction of a new free SHS curriculum starting for SHS1 on September 27, 2024, may be influencing the school selection process.

An update from the GES and other relevant stakeholders is expected soon, which should address all the questions raised and provide additional information to facilitate a smooth post-BECE process. Stakeholders have requested that the school selection take place after the release of the 2024 BECE results.
