MOE has announced a new requirement for Senior High students applying to tertiary institutions.

The Ministry of Education has announced a new requirement for Senior High School (SHS) students applying to universities and tertiary institutions: they must provide a testimonial emphasizing their character. This initiative aims to address the increasing incidents of student indiscipline in SHS across Ghana and promote discipline among students.

At the 2024 Ghana Teacher Prize event, Education Minister Dr. Osei Yaw Adutwum highlighted the ministry’s commitment to cracking down on indiscipline in high schools. He emphasized the goal of eliminating student violence and property damage, stating, “We are aiming for zero tolerance towards indiscipline in our high schools.”

Recent incidents, such as a fatal stabbing at O’Reilly Senior High School, have raised concerns about growing student indiscipline. These incidents include attacks on teachers and vandalism of school property, prompting calls for stronger measures from stakeholders like the Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT).

Thomas Tanko Musah, GNAT’s General Secretary, expressed alarm over students’ deteriorating behavior, citing instances where students have assaulted teachers with parental support. He warned that failing to curb such behavior could lead to serious future problems.

The Ministry’s policy requiring character testimonials for SHS graduates is expected to help instill discipline and uphold values of respect and responsibility among prospective university students. This initiative is part of broader efforts to create a positive learning environment and promote good conduct in schools.
